What to Wear for the Rest of Your Life: Ageless Secrets of Style by Kim Johnson Gross. Aging isn’t for sissies, as they say. And one of the more unfortunate things about aging is that you no longer can get away with some of the things you have worn all your life. Like jean cutoff shorts, for instance. At some point, you have to start dressing your age (of course that does not necessarily mean you need to act your age, which we of course do not do around here.) My mother always wore skirts. I have never seen her once, my entire life, in a pair of pants. Despite myself, as I started to, um, age, I started to feel uncomfortable putting a pair of shorts on in the summer. I couldn’t help it – it must be in my genes! I certainly don’t wear my mom’s skirts, but I do tend to wear cotton skirts now instead of shorts when it is hot out. So, as you can imagine, this book was right up my alley. Our lives have changed so much – shouldn’t our wardrobes?
Recently I enjoyed a fashion article about the late Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. It spoke of her timeless fashion sense. There were many pictures of Carolyn and John. And although in all of the pictures John appeared very fashionably dated, Carolyn looked like she could have been photographed yesterday. It was really fascinating, even for a person who doesn’t spend alot of time thinking about fashion.
Timeless is a word I’d love people to use if they were describing how I dressed. That is why What to Wear for the Rest of Your Life: Ageless Secrets of Style will have a permanent place on my bookshelf.
