The Art of
Spooning by Jim Grace and Lisa Goldblatt Grace
As we get ready to embark upon another busy holiday season,
it’s good to reflect, give thanks for our many blessings and
remind ourselves of the simple pleasures in life.
Simple pleasures like spooning, for instance.
Few things in this world can hold a candle to the sweet,
peaceful feeling of nestling into a spoon with someone you love.
It can be a significant other, a child, your faithful pup or
kitty - even your favorite pillow will do.
It is truly amazing that something so simple, so easy, can
make you feel so much better.
For those of you not familiar with spooning, it is a horizontal hug
of sorts. You snuggle
in tight with someone, like spoons in a drawer, and nestle into
each other’s nooks. It’s
much better explained in this cute little gift book “The Art of
Spooning”. In the
book the authors (who are married and spoon buddies) extol the
benefits of spooning, explain the roles of spooner and spoonee,
give step-by-step instructions on how to form the standard spoon
and other advanced techniques, provide tips on how to convert
someone to become a spooner, answer tough spoon-related questions
such as how to avoid hair suffocation, and more.
The book also importantly addresses the concept of “skin
hunger”, which is the feeling we get when we haven’t been
touched enough lately. Our
domestic furry friends have no problem displaying their “fur
hunger” as they happily plop into our laps for some loving.
But we humans aren’t usually so forward.
Instead we tend to zip through our lives, forgetting about
the power and need for touch.
But, spooning is the answer.
Spooning is mostly done while you sleep, so it really
isn’t something you need to make time for or squeeze into your
life. It’s stress
free, fat free, guilt free and cost free.
What could be better than that!
Once you start spooning, there is no going back.
Remember the Sex in the City episode when Carrie explained
that she always sleeps in the nook between Aidan’s neck and
shoulder? She’s
addicted – she’s a spooner. As the nights start getting
chillier, snuggle up with the one you love and spoon on J.
