The Great Husband Hunt by Laurie Graham
Enjoy a crazy ride through history with spirited and
unconventional Poppy Minkel. As
an heir to the Minkel’s Mighty Fine Mustard fortune, Poppy uses
what she’s got -spunk, a fierce rebellious streak and lots of
cash - to survive and even thrive during some of the world’s most
extraordinary times. As
her life is touched by tragic and awesome events such as the
sinking of the Titanic, two World Wars, Prohibition, and the
Depression, she perseveres and always manages to live life to the
fullest.
Poppy’s life begins rather uneventfully.
Her mother and aunt controlled her destiny and were
determined to do what they could to land her a suitable husband
(including ear correcting bandages and attempts to tame her
hopelessly wild hair). Then
Poppy’s father was lost at sea with the Titanic, and the husband
hunt was called off. She
was destined to become an old maid and attend to her widowed
mother. Fortunately
for Poppy, the
U.S.
entered WWI, and as women began to volunteer and join the
workforce, Poppy experienced her first taste of independence and
chance for adventure. There
was no going back to her ordinary, blasé life.
So Poppy embarks on a grand new life with the backdrop of
continuously changing world history.
There is an unsuitable first marriage, a heady lifestyle in
Paris
,
a scandalous affair, a child out of wedlock, an unheard of divorce,
a brush with English royalty, and so much more.
All the while, her mother, aunt and older sister cluck their
disapproval, but nothing will stop Poppy in her quest to be an
interesting person who leaves her mark.
Poppy may not be your favorite heroine of all time – she’s a
bit selfish and reckless – but you can’t help but admire her
unconventional-ness and daring in a time when women were expected
to be very conventional and proper.
After all, it’s women like Poppy who helped pave the way
for us modern women of today who are free to do as we please.
