The Curse of the Singles Table: A True Story of 1001 Nights Without Sex by Suzanne SchlosbergIf you think Suzanne sounds desperate, you are right. After all, how long can a girl go? The Curse of the Singles Table is the funniest book I have read in a long time. Suzanne, forever being banished to the "singles table" at weddings, manages to rack up an impressive 1001 days without sex, or what she refers to it as, "The Streak". But her abstinence is our entertainment. In this quest to end The Streak we follow her through her adventures, seeing ourselves in some of the nutty things she does, and laughing along the way.
We meet Suzanne, a thirty-ish L.A. based fitness writer, as she is extracting herself from a three year relationship that is going nowhere. Pondering her re-entrance to the dating scene, and deeply hurt, she decides she must make a dramatic break. So she packs up her things and moves to the tiny town of Bend, Oregon. Surely there must be some eligible single men there? Many months and scary dates later, she discovers the answer is no.
Suzanne then moves back to L.A. where she is now surrounded by her well-meaning, but intrusive family. It doesn't help matters that her sister is getting married, and her streak is now entering into the high triple digits. In between wedding showers, buying a condo, and watching Law & Order, she still has a lot of work to do. So she gets creative.
Perhaps a vacation is just what she needs to meet a tall dark stranger. Club Med promises to fit the bill, but the week ends with her streak intact. Time to visit a friend? One just happens to live in Kenya - but no luck there. Perhaps she should volunteer? Habitat From Humanity needs her, but she only discovers she has horrible home-building skills.
Finally, the magic of Match.com puts an end to Suzanne's plight (and even finds her a husband). But not before she perfects Starbucks Speed Dating.
From Suzanne's hilarious family, the ever-present "are you going to get married before I'm dead" grandmother, the happily engaged sister planning her wedding, to feng shui consultations and entries in the "Are You Hot or Not" website, you feel like her best friend, because she tells you everything. I doubt very few people would reveal themselves as Suzanne has. But you'll thank her, because she'll make you feel better over just about anything you have ever done to get a man.
