Bookends by Jane Green
Perhaps this book struck a chord because it's partly about a
couple of friends who fulfill their life-long dream of opening a bookstore.
But it's mostly about a group of close knit friends who first met in college and
are now 30-something. At a dinner party the group discovers that one of its
original members, with whom they've cut ties, is the sit-com writer of their
favorite t.v. show. The friends also realize that they are the real people
behind the show's characters. After reconnecting with their old friend,
each of their lives starts taking dramatic turns - some coincidental and some
not. A fun read with a little more substance than most chick lit.

Empire Falls by Richard Russo
Richard Russo expertly captures small town life in his Pulitzer
prize-winning novel. Empire Falls is a blue collar, run down, little New
England town where Miles Roby has spent his life. He almost escaped once
but dropped out of college upon learning his mother was ill. Capable of
having done much more, Miles tries to make the best of his life as the manager of
a burger grill. There are many colorful characters (and I do mean
characters) in this book, including Miles' fitness obsessed ex-wife, her
obnoxious boyfriend who constantly hangs out at the grill, Miles' free-loading
father, and the eccentric old woman who owns half the town, just to name a few.
Definitely a worthwhile read.

The Worst Day of My Life, So Far by M.A. Harper
After years of being away from her hick hometown in Louisiana,
Jeanne returns to care for her picture perfect mother who now has Alzheimer's.
As she witnesses the decline of her mother, Jeanne reflects on her own somewhat
disappointing life as she begins down the path of self-discovery and forgiveness.
Even though the subject matter is heavy, M. A. Harper has been able to tell one
woman's story of caring for an aging parent with wit and true-to-life humor.

Blessings by Anna Quindlen
This is a bittersweet story that will leave you loving its
unlikely hero. A troubled young man finds a baby on his doorstep and
decides to raise her as his own. His devotion to this child, the personal
growth he achieves, and the friendships he develops along the way are
heartwarming. If only it weren't for that unfortunate twist of fate…

A light and enjoyable read about the less-than-perfect life of a middle class,

marriage. As she reflects upon her life and compares it to those of her
various friends, she wonders "is this it then?" Be prepared to
laugh along the way as Clara attempts to spice up her life.
